A Qualitative Inquiry on the Job Experiences of Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Support Needs for Employment

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the job experiences and perception of individuals with autism spectrum disorders(ASD) and their support needs for employment. For this purpose, 6 individuals with ASD who are working on the different sites were interviewed. From the qualitative analysis, four themes emerged as follows: (1) the experiences which were about the previous job, (2) participants¡¯ current state of their employment, (3) positive effects and difficulties related to employment, (4) employment supports for individuals with ASD. Also, nine sub-themes were emerged. Results indicated that individuals with ASD have abilities to get a job and retain it, and that it needs employment supports focusing on characteristics of ASD to enhance employment outcomes. Based on findings, further implications were discussed in order to provide factors regarding employment supports for individuals with ASD: (1) strengthening vocational competences and implementing employment supports, which respond to unique characteristics of ASD, (2) providing supports through vocational rehabilitation system, (3) implementing career development and work -site training, (4) improving public perceptions on employment of individuals with ASD.
